Music & Exercise
You know that feeling, when you’ve given it your best, and your body has nothing left to offer – you are done.
Then that track comes on – the one which always gets you going – and suddenly your head is up, you find an energy that you didn’t know existed, and you’re back in the groove, with a smile on your face.
Music does that.
Music goes with exercise, we all know that, but it turns out there’s some science behind it. Researchers have found that the right music can make a big difference to our performance. Here are two key music effects:
Exercise doesn’t feel as hard when you are listening to a great track
The scientific term for this is “dissociation” – in other words, great music takes your mind off the effort, and makes it feel like fun.
Rhythm is, indeed, a dancer
The boffins call it “synchronisation”, to you and me it’s moving to the beat. When you move in time to the music, you can keep going harder, and for longer.
All of this just reinforces what we already knew – Music Matters. That’s why our instructors are also brilliant DJs, and it’s why we let you listen to their playlists, so you can pick a class where the music will spur you on.
